Daily Task Guidelines

How to Perform Ezhuthiniruthu (Vidyarambham)

Morning Purification & Pooja Veypu Retrieval

  • Wake up early, bathe the child, and dress them in traditional white-gold Kerala mundu/sari.
  • Clean the puja altar where the family books, laptops, and slate were placed for worship on Durgashtami evening (Pooja Veypu).
  • Perform a brief morning puja to Goddess Saraswati, retrieval of books/instruments (Pooja Eduppu) from the altar, marking the end of the study ban.

Setup for Ezhuthiniruthu Ceremony

  • Place a clean wooden mat or cloth facing East.
  • Gather a tray of raw white rice grains (or clean sand) and place it in front.
  • Keep a clean gold ring (or gold needle) and honey ready on the side.

Writing on the Tongue

  • The Guru (or father/grandfather) sits and places the child on their lap facing East.
  • Dip the clean gold ring into fresh honey.
  • Gently touch the child's tongue and write the sacred initiation mantra: 'Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah' (representing Lord Hari/Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi/Sri, and Lord Ganesha).

Writing on the Raw Rice Grains

  • The Guru holds the child's right index finger and guides it to trace the same mantra, 'Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah', on the tray of raw white rice or sand.
  • After the letters are written, distribute sweets (like payasam) to the child and family, marking the beginning of their formal learning.

1. Puranic Origins of Ezhuthiniruthu

Vidyarambham (literally 'Starting of Education') is a sacred ritual practiced in Kerala and other parts of South India on Vijayadashami morning. It marks the formal induction of children (usually aged 2 to 4 years) into letters, arts, literature, and music.

The ritual initiates the child with the mantra "Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah" which pays homage to Lord Vishnu (Hari), Goddess Lakshmi (Sri), and Lord Ganesha (Ganapataye), seeking their combined guidance to achieve righteous wealth, knowledge, and hurdle-free learning.

Historically, it is linked to the worship of Goddess Saraswati on Vijayadashami day, celebrating the triumph of intellect and wisdom over dark ignorance.
