Daily Task Guidelines

How to Build & Celebrate Bathukamma

Flower Gathering & Selection

  • Gather seasonal wild flowers during the morning: Gunugu (Celosia), Tangedu (Cassia auriculata), Gummadi (pumpkin flowers), Katla, Banthi (Marigold), and Chamanthi (Chrysanthemum).
  • Cut the stems carefully, keeping the flat heads intact for symmetrical stacking.

Building the Bathukamma Stack

  • Use a wide circular brass plate (Tambalam) as the foundation.
  • Lay down concentric circular rows of flowers, alternating colors (yellow, green, pink, white).
  • Taper the circle as you go upwards to form a beautiful cone/pyramid of flowers.
  • Place a small mound of cow dung representing Goddess Gouramma (Gauramma) on the top of the floral stack.

Evening Gathering & Folk Dance

  • At dusk, place the Bathukamma in the central courtyard or street square.
  • Women dress in traditional heavy silk saris, wear ornaments, and form large circles around the floral pyramids.
  • Clap rhythmically and sing traditional Bathukamma folk songs in chorus, moving in slow circular patterns clockwise.

Water Body Immersion (Visarjan)

  • Carry the flower structures on your head in a joyous procession to local lakes, rivers, or temple tanks.
  • Perform the final Aarti, spray water on the Gouramma, and float the floral pyramids gently on the water.
  • Share 'Saddulu' (five types of spiced rice) and sweets with family and community.

1. Puranic Legend of Mother Gauri

Bathukamma is a vibrant 9-day flower festival celebrated predominantly by the women of Telangana. It occurs during the Sharad Navratri season. In Telugu, 'Bathuku' means life and 'Amma' means mother, translating to 'Mother Goddess, Come Alive!'.

According to the legend, King Dharmangada of the Chola Dynasty lost his hundred sons in battle. After intense prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, she took birth in his house as a baby girl. The royal sages blessed the baby, saying 'Bathukamma!' (may you live forever!). Since then, women construct colorful floral pyramids representing the life-giving energy of the Goddess, seeking marital longevity and family prosperity.

2. Ecological Purification of Water Bodies

Beyond its spiritual value, Bathukamma is a masterpiece of ecological balance. The wild flowers used in the stack — Gunugu (Celosia) and Tangedu (Senna auriculata) — possess strong cleansing and antibacterial properties. When thousands of these floral structures are immersed in local ponds and rivers, they dissolve, releasing natural minerals that purify the water and feed the local aquatic life, preparing the water resources for winter usage.
