What to Do on Bhai Dooj: Sibling Task Guidelines

Morning Preparations & Purification

  • Both brothers and sisters must wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, clean the home, and take a holy bath.
  • Sisters should ideally draw a beautiful rangoli (Aipan or Alpana) using rice paste at the main entrance and around the puja seat.
  • Fast until the Tilak ceremony is completed to maintain the sanctity of the ritual.

Puja Thali Arrangement

  • Prepare a brass or silver platter (Puja Thali) with the following essentials: Roli (vermilion), sandalwood paste (Chandan), unbroken rice grains (Akshat), betel leaves (Paan), betel nuts (Supari), fresh marigold flowers, a whole dry coconut (Gola), and sweets.
  • Place a ghee lamp (diya) in the thali and light it.

Tilak & Aarti Ceremony

  • Seat the brother on a decorated wooden platform (Chowki) facing East or North.
  • Draw a protective circle of rice flour paste around the Chowki to ward off negative energies.
  • Sisters apply the sacred vermilion-sandalwood tilak on the brother's forehead, sticking a few Akshat grains on it.
  • Perform the brother's Aarti rotating the ghee lamp seven times clockwise while chanting sibling protection prayers.
  • Place the dry coconut (Gola), betel leaves, and supari in the brother's hands, wishing him long life.
  • Feed the brother his favorite sweet (like laddoo or kaju katli) to sweeten the relationship.

  • Sisters cook a special saatvik feast featuring the brother's favorite dishes (e.g., Puri, Chana Masala, Kadhi, and Halwa) and serve him with love.

1. Puranic Origins of Yama Dwitiya

Bhai Dooj (also known as Yama Dwitiya, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phota in Bengal, and Bhai Tika in Nepal) is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya. The festival honors Lord Yamraj and his sister Goddess Yamuna. It marks the culmination of the 5-day Diwali festival.

The scriptures record that Yamuna invited her brother Lord Yamraj to her house countless times. Due to his busy duties in hell, Yamraj kept delaying. Finally, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, he surprised her. Yamuna was overjoyed. She bathed his feet, applied a protective sandalwood tilak on his forehead, and fed him sweet preparations. Yamraj was so pleased that he told her to ask for any boon. Yamuna asked that any brother who visits his sister, receives her tilak, eats food served by her, and takes a dip in the Yamuna River on this day should be blessed with long health and protection from untimely death.
