1. Puranic Origins & Meaning of Dhanteras

Dhanteras (officially known as Dhanatrayodashi) marks the auspicious beginning of the 5-day Diwali festival. The word is composed of two Sanskrit terms: 'Dhan' meaning wealth/abundance and 'Teras' referring to the thirteenth lunar day of the Krishna Paksha in Kartik month.

According to ancient Puranic texts, this day is celebrated primarily to commemorate the divine appearance of Lord Dhanvantari, the celestial physician of the Gods and a direct avatar of Lord Vishnu. During the great cosmic churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) by the Devas and Asuras seeking the nectar of immortality, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the waves. In his hands, he carried a golden pitcher (Kalash) filled with Amrit and sacred texts containing the foundational principles of Ayurveda. Thus, Dhanteras is also widely celebrated as National Ayurveda Day in India.

Another captivating legend narrates the story of the 16-year-old son of King Hima. Astrologers predicted he would die of a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. Upon hearing this, his clever young bride did not allow him to sleep. She laid out all her ornaments of gold and silver in a heap at the entrance of their sleeping chamber and lit countless clay lamps. When Yama, the God of Death, arrived in the guise of a serpent, he was so blinded by the dazzling light of the gold and the lamps that he sat upon the heap of ornaments all night, listening to the bride's beautiful songs and stories. In the morning, Yama quietly slipped away, saving the prince's life.
