  • Draw beautiful and detailed Rangolis at the entrance, in the puja room, and near the safe/treasury.
  • Set up a raised wooden platform (Chowki) in the North-East corner of the puja room. Spread a new red silk cloth on it.
  • Place clay or metallic idols of Goddess Lakshmi (in the center), Lord Ganesha (to her left), and Goddess Saraswati (to her right).

Evening Maha Lakshmi Puja (Pradosh Kaal)

  • Light a main large ghee lamp (Akhand Diya) that will burn throughout the night.

  • Apply Kumkum and Sandalwood paste, and offer fresh red lotus flowers, rose garlands, coriander seeds, lotus seeds (Makhana), sugar candies (Batasha), and five seasonal fruits.
  • Light incense sticks, ring bells, and sing the Maha Lakshmi Aarti ('Jai Lakshmi Mata') in unison.

Illuminating the Abode & Feast

  • Light 11, 21, or 51 clay mustard oil diyas and place them at the entrance doors, windows, balconies, kitchen, bathroom, and under the Tulsi plant.
  • Prepare a saatvik festive dinner (Puri, Paneer curry, Chole, Pulao, and sweets like Kheer and Gulab Jamun) and serve it to the family.
  • Celebrate by lighting environment-friendly green sparklers and crackers.

1. Puranic Significance of Deepavali

Deepavali (literally "Row of Lights") is the crown jewel of Hindu festivals. It commemorates Lord Shri Rama’s triumphant return to Ayodhya alongside Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman after completing 14 years of forest exile and defeating Ravana. The overjoyed citizens of Ayodhya illuminated the entire city with thousands of earthen ghee lamps (diyas) on Kartik Amavasya night to guide their beloved King home.

On the exact same dark Amavasya night, Goddess Maha Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean) and chose Lord Vishnu as her eternal consort, blessing the cosmos with wealth, peace, and spiritual illumination.

In Bengal, Assam, and Odisha, this night is also observed as Kali Puja, where the fierce form of Adi Parvati, Goddess Kali, is worshipped to destroy ego, internal negativity, and negative planetary blocks.

2. Step-by-Step Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja Vidhi

  1. Purification & Rangoli: Clean the house thoroughly. Draw intricate lotus Rangolis at the entrance. Place Mango leaf Torans and light earthen diyas at all doors, balconies, and water sources.
  2. Setting the Sacred Altar: Spread a red silk cloth over a raised wooden platform (Chowki). Place new clay or metallic idols of Goddess Lakshmi on the right and Lord Ganesha on the left. Place a lota of Gangajal with a coconut (Kalash Sthapana).
  3. Panchamrit Abhishekam: Offer milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar syrup, followed by clean water, to the idols. Apply sandalwood paste and kumkum.
  4. Offerings: Offer fresh lotus flowers, marigold garlands, coriander seeds (Dhania), lotus seeds (Makhana), Batasha sweets, sugarcane, and 5 types of seasonal fruits.
  5. Aarti & Diya Lighting: Light a 5-faced main ghee lamp (Akhand Diya). Sing "Jai Lakshmi Mata" Aarti with family, ring bells, and light diyas around the house.

3. Powerful Mahalakshmi & Sri Suktam Mantras

Mahalakshmi Beej Mantra

ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं कमले कमलालये प्रसीद प्रसीद।
ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः॥

"O Supreme Goddess Mahalakshmi residing on the sacred lotus! Be pleased with my devotion and bless my home with eternal wealth, peace, and spiritual grace."
