1. Puranic Origins & Cosmic Power of Chhath
Chhath Puja is an ancient Vedic festival dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (Goddess Shasthi). Unlike most Hindu rituals where idols are worshipped, Chhath Puja is dedicated to the visible living deity — the Sun God — who sustains all life on Earth.
Rigveda scriptures praise Lord Surya as the soul of the universe ("Surya Atma Jagatas Tasthushas Cha"). In the Mahabharata, Karna (son of Surya) performed daily Arghya in river water, obtaining invincible solar armor. Draupadi and the Pandavas also performed Chhath Puja upon Sage Dhaumya's advice to regain their lost kingdom.
From a yogic perspective, standing in river water during sunrise and sunset acts as a natural solar therapy, activating the pineal and pituitary glands and charging the body with pranic energy, which is why the devotees (Vratins) are able to complete the waterless fast without physical fatigue.
2. Step-by-Step Culinary Guides
Lauki Bhaat (Day 1 Meal)
Cut fresh bottle gourd (Lauki) into cubes. Heat pure cow ghee in a heavy brass vessel, add cumin seeds and green chilies. Add washed chana dal, lauki, and Sendha Namak (rock salt). Cook until soft and serve hot with boiled Arwa rice.
Authentic Thekua Recipe
Mix coarse whole wheat flour with pure cow ghee. Add fennel seeds (Saunf), dry coconut flakes, and cardamom. Knead into a tight, dry dough using cooled jaggery syrup. Press small dough portions onto a wooden mold (Sancha) and deep-fry in pure cow ghee over low heat until dark golden brown.
3. Devotional Chhath Folk Songs & Mantras
Traditional Bhojpuri and Maithili folk songs sung during Chhath contain deep environmental consciousness:
कांच ही बांस के बहंगिया, बहंगी लचकत जाए...
बात जे पुछेला बटोहिया, बहंगी केकरा के जाए?
तू त अन्हर हउवे रे बटोहिया, बहंगी छठी मईया के जाए...
Translation: "The delicate bamboo basket bends under the weight of offerings. The traveler asks who this basket is for. O traveler, you are blind, this basket goes to honor Chhathi Maiya."
एहि सूर्य सहस्त्रांशो तेजोराशे जगत्पते।
अनुकम्पय मां भक्त्या गृहणाध्र्यं दिवाकर॥
"O Lord Surya, possessor of a thousand rays, sovereign of the universe! Out of compassion and devotion, accept this water offering (Arghya) and illuminate our path."
